9 Signs You May Have Sjögren's Syndrome -- Symptoms, Causes, Effects, Treatment and Prevention

18th June 2023 By Nationton Republic Food, Health and Medicine

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the salivary glands and tear glands, resulting in decreased production of saliva and tears. It can also affect other parts of the body, such as the joints, lungs, kidneys, and nervous system. t primarily affects women, and the exact cause is unknown. Here is a brief explanation of Sjögren's syndrome, along with its symptoms, diagnosis, causes, effects, treatment, and prevention:

Symptoms of Sjögren's Syndrome:

The symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome can vary among individuals but commonly include:

  1. Dryness of the eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes
  2. Eye irritation and dryness (dry eyes)
  3. Difficulty swallowing and speaking due to dry mouth
  4. Fatigue and general weakness
  5. Joint pain and swelling
  6. Dry skin and skin rashes
  7. Vaginal dryness
  8. Persistent dry cough
  9. Dental problems such as cavities and gum disease

Diagnosis of Sjögren's Syndrome:

Diagnosing Sjögren's syndrome involves a combination of medical history evaluation, physical examination, and diagnostic tests, which may include:

  1. Blood tests: To measure certain antibodies commonly found in people with Sjögren's syndrome, such as anti-SSA (Ro) and anti-SSB (La) antibodies.
  2. Eye tests: Assessing tear production and evaluating eye dryness using techniques such as the Schirmer test or tear breakup time test.
  3. Salivary gland tests: Measuring saliva production or performing a minor salivary gland biopsy to examine glandular tissue for signs of inflammation.

Causes of Sjögren's Syndrome:

The exact cause of Sjögren's syndrome is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. It is an autoimmune disorder, indicating that the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own cells and tissues, specifically the moisture-producing glands.

Effects of Sjögren's Syndrome:

Sjögren's syndrome can lead to various complications and effects on the body, including:

  1. Dental problems: Decreased saliva production can increase the risk of dental decay, gum disease, and oral infections.
  2. Eye complications: Dry eyes can cause irritation, corneal damage, and an increased susceptibility to eye infections.
  3. Joint pain and inflammation: Sjögren's syndrome can cause joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
  4. Organ involvement: In some cases, Sjögren's syndrome can affect other organs, such as the lungs, kidneys, liver, and nervous system.

Treatment and Prevention of Sjögren's Syndrome:

There is currently no cure for Sjögren's syndrome, but treatment aims to manage symptoms and prevent complications. Treatment options may include:

  1. Artificial tears and saliva substitutes: To relieve dryness and manage eye and mouth symptoms.
  2. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): To manage joint pain and inflammation.
  3. Immunosuppressive medications: In more severe cases, medications that suppress the immune system may be prescribed to reduce glandular inflammation.
  4. Moisture conservation: Using humidifiers, avoiding dry environments, and practicing good oral hygiene.
  5. Regular follow-up: Regular monitoring and check-ups with healthcare providers to assess disease progression and manage complications.

Preventing Sjögren's syndrome is not currently possible since the exact cause is unknown. However, early diagnosis and appropriate management can help prevent complications and improve quality of life for individuals with the condition.
